Eating Healthy Does Not Mean Limiting Your World

I have a confession to make. I'm a hardcore foodie. I honestly think about food constantly and my days usually revolve around whether or not I supplied my body with amazing food that also made me feel good. It also happens to be super convenient that I have an incredible best friend who not only shares my habits but is a hardcore foodie herself. We literally sit around on the weekends showing each other different pintrest photos that make our mouths water.

As many of you know, I do try to live an incredibly healthy lifestyle and it always baffles me when people believe that that means I'm limiting myself in any which way. I think I find more joy in food than anyone reaching for that greasy bag of chips ever could understand. I was overweight my entire life and so for a huge chunk of my experience I really just didn't understand food. By taking the time to understand what's going into my body and how it's going to negatively or positively affect me, I became able to live a healthy fulfilled life while still eating plenty of amazing food.

I do meal prep my meals throughout the week so that means a lot of similar variations each day. It can get kind of old and so that I don't limit myself and turn towards something unhealthy; I like to go to a new restaurant and try something new and healthy once a week. Eating out does not have to mean eating badly however, you do have to take the extra step to get educated before going into a restaurant blindly.

I like to read reviews online before going to a new place and actually browsing through a restaurants' mission statement. Often times they will include what types of oils they choose to cook with or where their produce comes from. Also, nutrition menus aren't as accessible in the actual store but rather simple to browse through on the inter web. That salad you may be opting for can have more calories and sugars than your body should be taking in during a whole day of eating.

Substitutes are so important as well. Yes, you're going to have to be that girl. Sometimes you'll have to make an order difficult, switch your egg omelette to only egg whites, ask for your dressing on the side, can I replace my potatoes with a side of steamed veggies? These are all simple substitutes that can make or break your meal.

For me, I don't have many vices. I don't drink or party or go out on the weekends too often. But I do truly enjoy finding new places to eat and finding great little treats that aren't going to throw off my routine. This weekend, Dilshika and I actually went to a little shop called Sunlife Organics that served those ever-so-popular acai bowls everyone on instagram likes to photograph. I have to say, it was delicious and incredibly worth the hype. I loved being able to have a treat for lunch that was still healthy, balanced, and so darn tasty. Eating healthy doesn't have to mean limiting your world. Just eat smart and educate yourself. There's tons of great food out there, you just have to make the choice to opt for those instead.

  1. Amazing post! I definitely agree with you. I'm now dairy-free because my body just can't handle it and ever since changing what I'm giving my body it's made it hard to eat out... Which is a bad thing! It just means I research before eating out and really take notice of what I'm feeding my body. Sure I miss cheese but the sliver lining is I'm more aware and it's I love that!

  2. Thanks Sarah! I've actually been cutting out dairy as well since my body just completely disagrees with me and it's been so challenging for me. I've always enjoyed cheese so it's difficult finding alternatives but that's awesome that you take the time now to be more aware as well (:

  3. My mouth is watering right now looking at that photograph. I agree-- you can eat healthy when eating out. One of my vices is Chipotle. I JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH. Like you-- I meal prep for the week. I use Chipotle as a treat to myself every Friday night. I keep it somewhat healthy by not adding cheese or sour cream.

  4. An amazing post! For me, if I tell myself I can't have something, I crave for it even more and I would probably binge eat it haha. All about self control. Although I have found out, I can't say no to cake if it's in the fridge.. so no cake for me! Haha.

  12. Amazing post! You're so right that just because you believe in eating healthy does not mean you are limiting yourself at all. I gave up fast food and honestly if I ever eat it now, I think it's gross and I feel bad about myself. Great post girl!

  14. i'm a massive foodie and i've still managed to lose 6 stone so it just shows that you definitely can still enjoy your food and be healthy at the same time! I will be honest though and say that I do have some naughty meals when i go out but like you say it's so easy to be good even when you eat out!
